Structure and stability to grow without losing the culture

Scattered tools joined into one Microsoft 365 operation – with the routines and risk ownership to keep growing well.

The situation

Inherently Human is a human rights consultancy that had grown the way good small organisations usually do: organically, with tools and ways of working accumulating as new needs arose. The result was tools and ways of working spread out in different directions, and friction starting to get in the way of delivering for clients.

The risk wasn’t just inefficiency. Inherently Human’s culture – collaborative, trusting, low on bureaucracy – was the thing that made it work, and the fear with any systems project is that structure arrives and the culture leaves. They needed their systems joined up and their operating routines standardised in a way that protected what made them them.

What I did

I helped them choose and embed an integrated set of tools across the whole operation – CRM, project delivery, time and budget tracking, finance, and a tidied-up file and knowledge structure – all within Microsoft 365, so everything lived where the team already worked rather than adding another platform to check.

Alongside the tools, I designed the operating routines to match: a clear delivery lifecycle from proposal through to offboarding, and risk registers owned by the people running each programme rather than just leadership, with a monthly rhythm for reviewing them. Structure that pushes ownership outwards is structure that strengthens a trusting culture instead of replacing it.

Then I trained the team and stayed alongside them as the new ways of working bedded in – because a system nobody has adopted is just a subscription.

What changed

The team moved from scattered tools to joined-up workflows, with clearer visibility across delivery, finances and resourcing, and the routines to keep growing without the old friction creeping back. By the end of the engagement the systems were installed, integrated and well on the way to being fully adopted – and the culture was intact, because the structure was built to carry it.
